Madge Dumpling’s Bedtime Stories

Pet rock fanciers are special. Like their rocky little pets, no two of them are the same but they do have two things in common. They all take their pet rock-keeping very seriously, and because a pet rock’s health depends upon a regular playtime with others of their kind, they and their little pets all meet together once a week at the Rubble Club. Madge Dumpling, Quarry-mistress, Chairman of the Rubble Club and world-famous pet rock whisperer, hosts the Rubble Club meetings in her parlour in the Stone Quarry of Undergrowby. The tales she has heard and memorized over the buffet table (between important pet rock talk) are too good to keep to herself, and for many years have proved popular as bedtime stories for her family of pet rocks, who now, like Madge, know them all off by heart. Madge’s latest fleeting passion is practising and perfecting her hand-writing What better thing to write down, she asked herself, than her own fabulous bedtime stories? For the benefit of pet rocks everywhere, she has agreed to share them with the membership of the Rubble Club.

Killjoy Roy

Glum Gladys, the pet rock, like all Undergrowby pet rocks, was born in the magical hearth of the Stone Quarry of Undergrowby, by the astonishing power of the Dumpling magic. Madge Dumpling, the six inch tall Quarry-mistress of the Stone Quarry was also a world-famous pet rock whisperer

Tricky Rock

Pet rocks are born by the fireside in Madge Dumpling's parlour, where they would happily sit for ever if they could. Having sad that, they do love a night out with their owners. Undergrowby's favourite night spot is the Summerlands Bonfire party, held nightly in the far south of Undergrowby, whatever the weather.

Snow White and the Misses Divine

The very boring Undergrowby Post Office, with its two bossy, stamping-mad postmistresses is just across the lane from the Stone Quarry Cottage, the swanky, grit-strewn home of the Quarrymistress and world-famous pet rock whisperer Madge Dumpling, the author of this story.

Miss Tick

Miss Tick, the schoolmistress from the Seven Schools of Undergrowby, had spent her whole life at the school. Once, long ago, she had even been a pupil there herself. She was a very odd pupil, but a pupil nonetheless.

Alf the Elf

Alf the elf was only a toddler when his family and their cargo of mops and buckets were washed in with the winter tide one lucky day, long, long ago. Before that there were no elves in Undergrowby, apart from in fairy stories, so you can imagine what a magical stir they caused amongst the gnomely Growbies! According to Clockit Quick, the Time and Tide Inspector
