The Nine Gnomesteads

The Gnomesteads and where do you belong (scroll down to WHERE DO YOU BELONG if you just want to know that and haven't got all day).

If you look at the map you will see that the body of the land is divided into nine gnomesteads. The flat, square one in the middle, the belly of the land, is called the Hub, and eight more are arranged around the Hub on the eight points of the compass. Each Gnomestead is peculiar in its own way; each is an important part of the whole, much as each of the body’s organs have peculiar functions which support the complex process of life in the rest of the body.
The Summerlands, home of fire, light and merriment, is in the south. It acts as the heart, mind, face and consciousness of the land.
The Watery Wetlands, the source of water power, bravery and invigoration is in the north. It is the bladder and kidneys, bones, back and carries the D.N.A. of the land.
Like north and south, fire and water are opposite in nature.
In the south west is the soft, cosy, homely earth of the Home Plains, the spleen and flesh of the land, and in the north east is the durable, fixed, mountainous terrain of the Rocky Headlands. The stomach and muscles of the land. Both these are earthy gnomesteads and are connected by the third earthy gnomestead, the Hub, the open, flat village square where all roads meet. It is the belly of the land, and the Empty Hole down which Mother Earth lives is the belly button of the land.
These three strong, supportive earthy gnomesteads are arranged in a heavy diagonal line through the map from corner to corner. They are arranged that way so that every other gnomestead is butted up against at least one of them for that substantial, safe, earthly support needed by all.
In the west and north west are the heavens, home of precious metals and heaven’s gifts, the most priceless of which is fresh air. They are Seventh Heaven and High Heaven respectively.
High Heaven, the lungs, skin and earthly limit of the land, is on a cold, cloudy mountain slope. Above its clouds live the angels and ancestors who govern the earth invisibly from afar.
Seventh Heaven, the large intestine and exhaust valve mechanism of the land, is a playground of heavenly delight where babies are born and the young-a- heart get together to play and let go of cares. Its meeting houses host joyful gatherings of all kinds.
In the east and south east are the two wood element gnomesteads, the Spring Green, which is the gall bladder of the land, and the Wandmaker’s Forest, the liver of the land. The liver and gall bladder govern the eyes, joints, ligaments and tendons and the nails, which are all important body parts for woodland creatures. In both of these gnomesteads the plant kingdom dominates the landscape. The Spring Green has its fast-growing plantation and the Wandmaker’s Forest has slow-growing ancient trees. The plant kingdom provides food and raw materials (true wealth) for everyone.

Every year, one of the nine gnomesteads takes its turn to have its own magic year. Babies born that year, no matter where in the land, are blessed with the nature of that year’s gnomestead.

Babies born when High Heaven was having its magic year would inherit the nature of the angels and guardians and would make good teachers, judges, and father-figures of any group. They will always like to be in charge. What’s theirs is theirs and they will decide where the lines and limits are drawn . Belonging to the metal element and the icy mountain tops they can be hard, cold and cutting, but to their credit, they are usually brave, hard-working and can often receive unearned wealth in their life and hold on to it well. Metal workers are good with precision, neatness and systems. Although they like to be well-nourished, nurtured and pampered it is often a one-way exchange because they are not usually eager to please or feed the mundane needs of others and (like heaven itself) can appear emotionally distant. Like the lungs of the body, which are the first line of defence for the immune system, they are defensive of the boundaries and borders of their own life’s bubble, and protective of people and things they hold dear. Grief hits the lungs (and therefore the immune system) hard and lower belly breathing techniques are useful to learn to avoid prolonging grief.
If you were born after February in 1904, 1913, 1922, 1931, 1940, 1949, 1958, 1967, 1976, 1985, 1994, 2003, and every nine years thereafter, you will own the magic of High Heaven. If you were born in January or February, while the gnomes are still hibernating for the winter, you will more likely belong in the previous year, which holds the magic of Seventh Heaven.

Seventh Heaven babies are very different. They never completely grow up, so they are good with children, creative play and hobbies. They are open and honest and do not like to decide where strict lines are drawn. They will always want to push the boundaries and give birth to the new. They belong to the metal element and are like the large intestine of the land, whose job is to make good use of every scrap of earthly sustenance available to them, hoard it then give it useful form and then let go of what they have created. Letting go is a recurring theme to their regular life challenges. Their straight-forward childlike open quality is disarming, easing others naturally into being able to let go, talk, play and relax.
If you were born after February in 1903, 1912, 1921, 1930, 1939, 1948, 1957, 1966, 1975, 1984, 1993, 2002, 2011 and every nine years thereafter, you will own the magic of Seventh Heaven. If you were born in January or February you will more likely belong in the previous year which holds the magic of the Rocky Headlands.

Summerlands babies are like rays of sunshine, sparklers or candle flames, attracting attention, lighting up a room,
entertaining and illuminating others wherever they go. The heart and mind is their body organ home. They house the awareness, consciousness, memory and imagination. The heart opens in the tongue so they may be expected to talk and laugh a lot, but there can be speech impediments or lack of speech if they encounter emotional problems. They are prone to fantasy and make good actors and entertainers, writers and famous faces. They spin an imaginative, often quick witted, humorous web with their words to captivate admirers. They cling to those they love and do not thrive in isolation unless on a temporary spiritual quest to understand their own heart from within.
If you were born after February in 1901, 1910, 1919, 1928, 1937, 1946, 1955, 1964, 1973, 1982, 1991, 2000, 2009, etc., you will own the magic of the Summerlands. If you were born in January or February of these years you will more likely belong in the previous year, which holds the magic of the Watery Wetlands.

Home Plains babies are cuddly and kind, a safe haven, homely and good with animals and children. The material world and hands-on practical matters are important to them. They are a safe pair of hands, good cake makers, sweetly fragrant and nurturing, prone to worry and over-thinking. To counteract the physical ill effects of worry and over-thinking (diabetes, muscle weakness, leakages, phlegm, lumps, etc) they must train themselves to direct the mind regularly into the physical body by exercise, massage, yoga, etc..
If you were born after February in 1908, 1917, 1926, 1935, 1944, 1953, 1962, 1971, 1980, 1989, 1998, 2007, 2016, etc, you will own the magic of the Home Plains. If you were born in January or February of these years you will more likely own the magic of the Spring Green.

Rocky Headlands babies are solid, law-abiding and dependable like a mountain. The grave mounds of the ancestors and all the ancient texts are kept in the Rocky Headlands so they have a strong respect for history and what belongs precisely where in life’s various pigeon holes. Others lean on them and expect them to take responsibility, so they do. Solitary uphill journeys of the intellect are to be expected, leading them to be self-challenging, fixed in their ways and stubborn. This rigid tendency makes them perfect for upholding traditional structures and adhering to the rules of institutions. The stomach is their bodily organ, so dietary concerns to them are paramount. The earth element to which they belong makes them prone to
worry, cynicism and over-intellectualising, so regular exercise is needed to counteract the negative effects of dwelling too much in the intellect(see Home Plains).
If you were born after Februaryin 1902, 1911, 1920, 1929, 1938, 1947, 1956, 1965, 1974, 1983, 1992, 2001, 2010, etc, you will own the magic of the Rocky Headlands. If you were born in January or February of these years you will more likely own the magic of the Summerlands.

Spring Green babies are ambitious, expect to succeed and so they do. They are ground-breakers, seed-setters, thunderbolts, directors and short-term project managers, capable of changing careers and lifestyles many times over a lifetime unless they have a job which presents them with new and varied challenges. They do not thrive well in a single rut and may repeatedly need to move on to pastures new. They handle people well and like to be in company.  They preen themselves like a gardener prunes a plant, often  displaying vanity. Superficial appearance matters to them. They are team players but put themselves on a pedestal of entitlement above others within their ranks. The gall bladder is the important organ belonging to the wood element and like the other wood element organ, the liver, this governs the joints, eyes, ligaments, tendons, nails and digestion of fats. Anger, depression, addiction and frustration are common, especially in spring, in the wind, if they do not get enough flowing exercise, or if there is insufficient daylight (or love light).
If you were born after February in 1907, 1916, 1925, 1934, 1943, 1952,1961, 1970, 1979, 1988, 1997, 2006, 2015, etc., You will own the magic of the Spring Green. If you were born in January or February you will more probably belong in the previous year which holds the magic of the Wandmaker’s Forest.

Wandmaker’s Forest babies have the grace and beauty of the trees and are charming and seductive. In their gentle presence life-changing decisions are made easier. A tree knows who it is, dances in the wind, grows better with age and drips with abundance. A giver of gifts, a long term co-operative friend, a team player. A wise, all-seeing visionary whose organ, the liver, governs all the same body parts as the gall bladder,(see the Spring Green paragraph above). They are matchmakers, matching beings with each other and with their fate.
If you were born after February in 1906, 1915, 1924, 1933, 1942, 1951, 1960, 1969, 1078, 1987, 1996, 2005, 2014,etc., you own the magic of the Wandmaker’s Forest. If you were bornin January or February of these years you will more likely belong in the year before, which owns the magic of the Hub.

Watery Wetlands babies are born to drive forward along the river of their life, pursuing careers, seeking new adventures.
They are independent, unafraid of solitary challenges and have plenty of back. They are warriors, riders, drivers and powerhouses. They can appear emotionally cool on the surface because their emotions run deeply. Rain brings fertility and abundance, so they should be creators of wealth. Their important body organs are the kidneys and bladder which govern three important source aspects of life.                                                                                                                                      1) Warming the body, especially the core energy feeding the will-to-work and the adrenal rush, whose source is the right kidney,                                                                                                                                                                                                           2) Cooling, hydrating and resting the body using fluid energy which lives in the left kidney, and                                                                                                                                                                                                                3) storing the blueprint and essence of life, the inherited factor, which lives between the kidneys. The water element governs the metabolism of body fluids, including urine, blood, digestive juices, also genetic factor, the DNA and the cerebrospinal fluid which nourishes the brain. It also governs the generation of power for work and the cooling influence essential for hibernation and rest. It manifests in the strength of the bones, especially the spine, teeth and head hair.
If you were born after February in 1900, 1909, 1918, 1927, 1936, 1945, 1954, 1963, 1972, 1981, 1990, 1999, 2008, 2017, etc..y ou own the magic of the Watery Wetlands. If you were born in January or February of these years you would more likely belong in the previous year which holds the magic of the Home Plains.

The Hub dwellers are right in the middle of all the actions of others, but are necessarily somewhat static in themselves, relatively directionless, embodying the still, receptive nature of Mother Earth. They can be misled into believing they are
missing something and crave for more than there is, sucking at the air, wishing for excitement, planning treats, journeys and adventures for themselves, but wherever they go they will always be in the Hub. Heaven, earth’s benefactor, the invisible, gift-giving, active metal principle, which is the polar opposite of the earth element, by natural attraction craves to supply even their unearned needs and feed their hunger. Something heaven-sent will always fall into their lap as long as they take up their rightful role as soft, benevolent supporters of others. If you were born in the Hub, trust and be still. Perform a spiritual discipline faithfully which will enable you to become the still space in all turning for others. You are a catalyst for change in the world, a crossroads. You need to be grounded and secure within yourself.
The body part in the Hub is the belly, the umbilicus, the connection to the mother and source of food. You should be skilful with food, specialising in starchy food. The earth element to which this area belongs makes you prone to over-thinking, so gentle exercise, like walking or tai chi is advised to counteract the ill effects of worry on the stomach and spleen.(see Home Plains) The earth element governs the flesh and muscles, the metabolism of sugars and the lymph glands, the entire front of the body. Hugging and holding are important.
